• National Sex Offender Registration Search - While sex offenders constitute a large and increasing population of prison inmates, most are eventually released to the community. Some 60% of convicted sex offenders are supervised in the community, whether directly following sentencing or after a term of incarceration in jail or prison. As a result, there is a growing interest in providing community supervision for this population as an effective means of reducing the threat of future victimization ($10 retail value per report).

Background Screening Facts

• A survey in Inc. magazine found the following to be true of job applicants:
  • 15% falsify academic qualifications, 10% falsely upgrade their academic qualifications, 35% claim false achievements or experiences.
  • 70% exaggerate the importance of their achievements, 12% have criminal records they had not reported.
• According to the Bureau of Justice:
  • Of released sex offenders who allegedly committed another sex crime, 40% perpetrated the new offense within a year or less from their prison discharge.
  • Within 3 years of release, 2.5% of released rapists were rearrested for another rape, and 1.2% of those who had served time for homicide were arrested for a new homicide.
• Currently, it is estimated that adolescents (ages 13 to 17) account for up to one-fifth of all rapes and one-half of all cases of child molestation committed each year (Barbaree, Hudson, and Seto, 1993). In 1995, youth were involved in 15% of all forcible rapes cleared by arrest - approximately 18 adolescents per 100,000 were arrested for forcible rape. In the same year, approximately 16,100 adolescents were arrested for sexual offenses, excluding rape and prostitution (Sickmund, Snyder, Poe-Yamagata, 1997).
